Student internship position available at Philips

We are looking for a student who likes to do an internship or Master's project at Philips Research Eindhoven, The Netherlands. The assignment includes a study of literature and existing standards, and design and validation of (XML) description formats to describe haptic stimuli and effects. The description includes effect patterns (i.e. changing over time and space) and location of where these impact the human body. A software implementation will be made that shows how the data format can be used to drive haptics devices (that are available in our lab) in an efficient manner. This software should be connected to the Second Life client (e.g. directly integrated or through GridProxyApp) to demonstrate how these effects really work in a virtual world.

If you are interested, see www.philips.com/about/careers for the full description! Search for Job ID 59027.

Tactile Jacket from Philips in the news

The "tactile jacket" from Philips Research was recently in the news and cited on many blogs. The same technology we use in the context of the Metaverse1 project to provide tactile experiences, based on events in a virtual world, game or movie. Other form factors (besides a jacket) are coming up!
